Dear theStylishDevil :
I am currently a model. I aspire to be able to coordinate fashion shows in the future. How do I gain the experience or knowledge to do that?
—Unicronic
Unicronic:
As a model, it’s great if you already have had some experience modeling in fashion shows. That helps you understand some of the backstage production aspect of running/being part of a fashion show and how organized it must be so that the show looks perfect.
To gain experience, here are some starting points:
- you can look for production companies that specialize in fashion events and see if they will take on interns.
- if you’re a student, see if your college or high school has a fashion club. Take the initiative and organize a fashion show for your school’s designers.
- When first starting out, see if you can take on a specific role and grow from there (i.e. model coordinator —> designer coordinator —> marketing coordinator —> eventually fashion director or creative director). That will help you understand the roles needed to create a successful show.
However, to be successful in coordinating fashion shows, you also need to already have some of the qualities listed below and continually strive to improve on them:
- highly detailed and organized
- ability to handle stress calmly
- be open to last minute changes
- effectively communicate to others and direct them
- a good attitude
Best of luck!

Dear theStylishDevil :
Who do you network with when you’re a stylist?
—California Fashion Student
California Fashion Student :
You can honestly network with anyone when you’re a stylist (or whatever career industry you are in).
Try to network with others who have similar aesthetics or views in the work you would like to produce.Talk to photographers, models, designers, and other stylists.
Be around successful and positive people;
they’ll help you feel and grow in that direction :)

Dear theStylishDevil :
Who do you talk to when getting started in styling to become a stylist?
—California Fashion Student
California Fashion Student :
The best person to talk to when getting started in styling to become a stylist is with someone who could mentor you.
They could be a fellow stylist, fashion director, or merchandiser who has experience in coordinating looks. There are many different genres of styling— product styling, set styling, editorial styling, fashion shows, celebrity styling, image consulting/personal styling… to name a few.
I suggest assisting someone who has experience in the sort of styling you aspire to do.
