n0things-perf3ct said: Hi there! I see that you are currently a fashion intern. I have been working in boutiques since I was 13 and I've always been extremely passionate about fashion. I'm going to be a senior in high school in the fall and I was wondering if you could tell me what college you attend as well as your major along with any advice you could give me as someone with the dream of being successful as a merchandiser/stylist/buyer in the fashion industry. I'd really appreciate it!
I am currently a Personal Stylist at Nordstrom’s. I have worked in the industry as a fashion stylist and model.
I attended West Valley College and received an Associate’s degree in Apparel Design. I also have two fashion styling certificates: one from Elite Fashion Academy Los Angeles & the other from School of Style.
I recommend getting hands-on experience through internships and assisting. Try different internships— I’ve been an intern for a jewelry designer, fashion director, and fashion designer.
If you’re looking to get into merchandising, buying, or wardrobe styling, try working in a department store. Your product knowledge will be tested— imagine 7 floors of merchandise!
Always believe in yourself and learn from your mistakes.
To see my work experience, feel free to check out my resume on linked-in:
Linked-in is great to see what others have done before you; look at a merchandiser’s or buyer’s resume and that’ll help give you an idea of what type of work to look for.
Best of luck in your future endeavors!
